Teachers across the country might be smiling soon after the Salaries and Renumeration Commission chair Lynn Mengich directed all public institutions to submit allowances they pay their workers for review.
SRC chair says that it has come to the attention of the commission that some institutions calculate allowances in terms of a percentage of the basic salary. With this criteria, some commissions like the Teachers Service Commission pay little allowances to its employees.
The SRC has therefore directed all the public institutions to submit the list of allowances paid to its workers for harmonisation.
The commission says that the deadline for submission of details is 30th November 2021. The chair recognizes that some institutions pay as high as 70 percent of basic salary as allowances.
She says that others like TSC pay as low as 20 percent of basic salary as allowances and thus the need to harmonise the allowances for all public civil servants.
The move by SRC to review allowances for all public service servants might be in favour of teachers because they are the worst hit group when it comes to receiving little allowances.
