Big win for science and mathematics teachers after the president made the following big announcement today
Science teachers teaching biology, chemistry, maths, physics and ICT will be given a pay hike, and not their counterparts in arts, after the ugandan President revealed that science teachers have a reason to smile.
Science teachers will be paid exorbitantly, starting from the high school level. The President said that science teachers contribute a lot and are directed towards improving the quality of life.
The salary hikes of science teachers have sparked mixed reactions from the public as arts counterparts wonder what will happen to them and on top of that all science teachers are heavily recalculated as they directly contribute to economic and social development.
The General Secretary of the Teachers’ Union, Mr. Baguma Filbert, questioned how the cabinet agreed to increase the monthly salary for science teachers and not for all teachers.
The Collective Bargaining Agreement of 2018 signed by the teachers union and the government states that the government will increase the salaries of all teachers equally. However, on Wednesday the president insisted that only science teachers would get the pay hike. The CBA has been stirred after the President’s repetition.
In his address, the President urged the teachers not to pressurize them for money or salary hike. Don’t put me on the tenterhook, he said.
The government wants to increase the salary of all teachers and all other public servants but it is short of money to do so. What the government can do now, however, is to start with the recounting of science teachers.
He argued that the rest of the teachers and public servants will have to wait for their turn. He said the plan was well thought out. Art teachers should not protest or bring any.
Teachers from other categories who have the same qualifications as science teachers but have expertise in other areas questioned whether there are any grand plans to increase their salaries if the pay hike for science teachers is implemented.
Also, what about the commitment the government signed with teachers on the 2018 CBA? He asked the question.
Overall Mr. President Museveni was good to Ugandan teachers and the proposed pay hike for science teachers is aimed at motivating teachers and not dividing the teaching fraternity.
Unfortunately, Mr. Baguma is of the opposite opinion that if the wage increase scheme is carried forward, there will be division, animosity, despair, discontent, degradation and discrimination in the teaching fraternity.
