A one year diploma program to prepare primary school and early childhood education teachers has been put in place by the government.
This is aimed at preparing them fully on the new CBC curriculum that was rolled out in January 2020.
Majority of the trainees are the P1 certificate holders. Since the introduction of Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) most teacher training colleges had remained without students since January.
The program is a relief with most of the teachers having been jobless.
With the qualifications having been well outlined, a Cplain in KCSE or its equivalent as stated by knec, most of the applicants failed to meet the requirement with only 400 applicants qualifying.
Those who qualified were distributed amongst 5 selected training colleges-Thogoto, Machakos,Igoji,Baringo and Migori.
Basic education principal secretary Julius Jwan said the skills upgrading scheme targets serving teachers under TSC,those under county government and those in private primary schools..
