The Teachers Service Commission (TSC), which employs teachers, has started the process of posting freshly recruited intern teachers in various schools across the country.
The panel was constituted to address the acute shortage of teachers in schools. In September 2021, a total of 1995 teacher internship positions were posted, including 1038 for primary schools and 957 for high school teachers, according to TSC, marking the government’s effort to establish jobs for a pool of young trained citizens to the country’s labour market.

The commission recently extended the terms of 4,000 interns whose contracts were due to expire in December 2021. It also intends to hire at least 6,000 interns before the end of the year.
According to TSC CEO Nancy Macharia the new additional interns will help schools cope with the enrollment which has increased, the workload increased, especially given the government’s policy of 100% transition from primary to secondary school.
“It is a commendable government effort to ensure that our public schools have high quality education and teaching,” said Macharia.
According to Macharia, the commission will spend 1.2 billion shillings on internship recruitment of 6,000 TSC Interns to address more concerned about the growing burden imposed by the 100% transition policy, she said, and calls on the government to invest additional cash for teacher recruitment.
“Since the 100 percent transition program began, the government has allocated TSC funding annually to recruit additional trainers,” said Nancy Macharia , however, of the 6,000 internship positions, only 2,000 will be allocated to primary schools, the remaining 4,000. Secondary will be prescribed. TSC has indicated that it will recruit additional teachers on internship again in December this year to meet the target of 6000 by January.
