Rights body has a problem with CS Magoha over advice he gave to school Girls
A rights body has emerged problem with George Magoha as he advised schoolgirls to stay away from teachers who usually hunt them.
The East African Center for Human Rights (EACHR) highlighted that Prof Magoha’s July 17 statement called for shifting the blame of teenage pregnancies to girls instead he would have addressed the main genenis of the problem.
In his statement, Magoha addressed the schoolgirls, telling them, “Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. You are there with the power…” as he warned the girls against agreeing to the teachers’ tricks of invoving in love matters.
EACHR boss Dr Judith Oluu said Magoha’s warning was wrong and could not have come at a worse time when the country is registering highest rate of teen pregnancies which has never been experienced in Kenya.
Schools have also been identified as the second largest center of sexual violence against young girls after the home environment.
“We would like to call out the CS for making such demoralising statements, which only targeted to change the main source of the problem and directed it to the Girls. It is difficult for any girl to report whenever she is sexually abused since all the problems are to directed to them” madam Oluu said
He said Article 35(1)d of the Constitution protects children from abuse and state authorities like Magoha should work to bring to life the provision.
He also cited the sexual Offenses Act, which criminalizes all forms of activity with any person below the age of 18 years and the Children Act in Section 13 which mandates the State to to protect them from physical and psychological abuse, neglect and any other form of exploitation, including sexual violence
