Muturi added that there are open positions available to replace teachers who left due to natural attrition.

“Nationally we have a deficit of about 100,000 teachers, but the government is always giving us the opportunity to recruit 5,000 teachers every year,” he said.

While noting that all stakeholders play an important role in ensuring that learners receive a high-quality education, the TSC boss stated that the commission is working to create a welcoming environment for both students and teachers.

The Teachers Service Commission estimates that the country needs 103,000 teachers to address the current shortage and fully implement the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC) system.

The commission is currently facing a crisis due to the retirement of approximately 25,000 teachers aged 58 and up over the next two years.

The Commission termed the plan to hire 5,000 teachers per year “a drop in the ocean,” noting that the teaching profession loses between 8,000 and 10,000 teachers per year due to retirement, natural causes, or death.
