TSC advertises 4000 more permanent teaching vacancies, check out the application process, deadline of application and the subjects to be considered in the recruitment exercise


The Teachers Service Commission is looking to hire 4,000 more intern teachers to meet the targeted 6,000 interns in January.



In July, the commission announced its intention to recruit 6,000 teachers on internship contract. The government’s initiative to cushion the youth recruited 2,000 teachers. TSC will now try to counter the shortfall by announcing more vacancies.



This comes at a time when lots of unemployed teachers are now struggling for limited internship opportunities as TSC has made it the only sure way to get a permanent job.



Unemployed teachers have been locked in stiff competition for 1038 internship vacancies available in primary schools and 957 vacancies for secondary schools when interviews are called in the latest recruitment drive.



The application window closed on Monday last week, and TSC officials in the counties are currently preparing merit lists that will be used to shortlist interviewees



TSC Regional Directors are expected to send the system-generated list of applicants to TSC Headquarters by Monday, 18 October 2021. The contract of service of the intern was also extended for one more year.



“It is only after approval at headquarters and vetted at the county level that applicants will be called to sign an internship agreement and issued with an offer of internship letter,” reads a circular signed by TSC Director Staffing, Rita Wahome.



Reliable sources indicated that the number of applications is “huge”, even though the newspaper could not immediately establish the number of letters received as the process is yet to be finalised.



There are more than 300,000 trained but unemployed teachers in the country, while the shortage of tutors is around 100,000.



The high interest in the internship program contrasts sharply with what was first offered on board in 2019. 10,000 unemployed teachers, when most of them gave it wide berths. This was mostly due to poor monthly stipends of  ksh 10,000 and  ksh15,000 for interns in primary and secondary schools respectively.




Since then the amount has been increased to Sh15,000 and Sh20,000. However, the main attraction for unemployed graduates is the 30 percent automatic marks that are awarded to interns during recruitment for permanent employment. Internship program was started to overcome the acute shortage of teachers in schools.



Enrolled interns will report to schools in January, when they open for a third term. TSC is hiring 5,000 teachers every year, but the shortage has not diminished since the implementation of 100 percent transition pupils from primary to secondary schools.



According to the scoring sheet for interns, TSC will award marks based on the quality of their degree or certificate and also the length of time they have been without employment since graduation.
